On one end GIA is the “tightest” and more consistent. This means that their diamonds are graded the most strictly. On the other EGL is more loose. The same diamond will likely grade differently between the diamond labs. if you walk into a Diamond District NYC jeweler who is selling an EGL diamond, it should sell for less than a GIA Diamond of the same quality.

Both are reputable, but James Allen (www.JamesAllen.com) is rated A+ buy the Better Business Bureau. Neither however will give you the type of guidance that a good New York City Jeweler will.

The most recognized and well respected is GIA. Stay away from EGL, they over grade and have gotten into trouble lately.
